A new term is gaining traction on social media: “functional freeze.” This phenomenon, recently highlighted in a viral TikTok video by therapist Simone Saunders (@thecognitivecorner), describes a state where individuals are able to perform daily tasks but feel disconnected and overwhelmed.

What is Functional Freeze?
Dr. Caroline Fenkel, LCSW, describes functional freeze as “a kind of immobilization where you’re functioning, but not fully engaged.” It’s a response to stress or trauma, where the body and mind shut down to avoid further harm.
Lauren Auer, LCPC, compares it to a force-quit button on an overheating laptop: “When the brain is overwhelmed by stress or trauma, it can decide that freezing is the best way to survive.”
Signs of Functional Freeze:
- Difficulty with daily tasks beyond essential obligations
- Feeling numb, foggy, or on autopilot
- Lack of motivation and desire to isolate
- Deep exhaustion that persists despite rest
- Tendency to scroll on phone for extended periods
- Reduced interest in social activities or errands
Experts emphasize that while functional freeze is common, it’s possible to overcome with intentional effort and support. However, the journey to recovery may require patience and persistence.
